Who We Are

CAER stands for Community Awareness and Emergency Response.  The Thunder Bay CAER Group has been functioning for over 15 years.  The Group is comprised of local manufacturers, producers, transporters of dangerous goods, emergency responders and government agencies.  The goals of this voluntary group include fostering community outreach, reducing potential harm to employees and the public and establishing and maintaining Emergency Response Plans for member companies and the surrounding community.

We are part of the community and understand that a key principle is the public’s right to know what is made and used in their community. Further, you the citizens of Thunder Bay have the right to know what is being done to ensure these products are being handled and transported safely.

Through the CAER Group you can access information about local producers to increase your awareness of the products manufactured, their uses and the safeguards in place to protect workers and the public.  Many facilities offer tours which is an excellent way to increase your knowledge base of the businesses in your neighborhood.

The primary objective of the CAER Group is to ensure that hazards are under proper control, in the event of an occurrence the CAER code requires that companies are properly prepared.  To ensure this level of preparedness all participants are expected to have a full emergency plan in place for their site.  There exists a constant dialogue between industry and emergency response agencies.  CAER members are an integral part of the city’s emergency plan which encompasses all serious emergencies.

Our Thunder Bay members believe that if communities, neighbours and other industries learn about CAER and work together on emergency preparedness, the result will be better protection if something does happen – whether it's an industrial fire or a tornado.  The closer relationships between industries and their communities should also lead to better understanding and to more peace-of-mind, for all those involved.
